If you want to lose weight you should eat with a fork instead of a spoon, scientists say.

A study has found that people who eat with a fork want less food than those who dine with a spoon.

Using a fork not only means you taste things more gradually but each bite seems smaller.

As a result your total calorie intake is lower than if you finished your meal with a spoon.

Portland State University marketing professor Courtney Szocs, the co-author of the study, said that consumers thought the food was actually healthier when they sampled it with a spoon.

But the problem was that they wanted to eat more of it too.
The study suggests that when it comes to dessert it might be best to tackle it with a fork if you want to stay trim.

In a series of experiments, test participants were given a bite sized sample of a food such as chocolate cake and either a spoon or a fork.

They were then asked to eat the item using the cutlery that had been provided.

Afterwards the test participants were asked how many calories they thought they had consumed, as well as how many extra pieces they wanted to eat.

Dr Dipayan Biswas, a marketing professor at the University of South Florida, the study’s lead author, said: “In most cases when we eating at home, a friend’s place or a restaurant we might reach for the fork or the spoon based on what’s given to us or based on what’s most convenient.

“The findings of our research show whether you eat the same food with a spoon or a fork has strong implications for how much food you eat.

“In most cases it might be a wise decision to eat the food with a fork.

“Chances are you’ll eat less.”The study was published in the Journal of the Association for Consumer Research.

Previous research into food psychology has examined other surprising factors which influence how much we eat.

If we eat yogurt off a lightweight, plastic spoon it tastes more filling than if we eat it off a silver spoon.

And if there is less contrast between the colour of the utensil and the food then things taste sweeter.

So many things come together when weight loss is concerned. Apart from watching the volume of what you eat, this eating with a fork suggestion  is  another tip.
