“Polygamy Is Still Illegal In Eritrea” -Eritreans Lament As They React To Social Media Hoax That Men Must Marry Two Wives

2

Since yesterday the reports emerged online about the Eritrean law forcing men into polygamy, social media has been agog with all sorts of discussions an meme’s relating to the report and the desire for Nigerian men to relocate.

But fresh indications suggest that the report is hoax and the fake story ws originally posted by a Somali website by an unnamed “activist”. The said “activist” posted a memo on a social media site allegedly from the Eritrean government asking men to marry at least two wives due to shortage of men caused by war.  Read the full story here.

Many Eritreans have now pointed out that the hoax report goes against the recently instituted Penal Code of Eritrea, which practically makes polygamy illegal in the country. See the tweets and the section from the penal code below:

Blame it on bloggers for misleading the public, no one investigate a report anymore, everyone just wanna be the first to break a news, not knowing if it’s true or false.
