The Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, has directed all Zonal Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and State Commissioners of Police to arrest anybody found selling petrol and other petroleum products in plastic container.

The move the IGP said emanates from the growing concern of the hazard relating to the activities of black marketers, especially those who sell petroleum products inside plastic containers/jerry-cans, etc.

A statement signed by the Force Public Relations officer, ACP Olabisi Kolawole quoted the IGP saying that

“apart from the hardship this act is causing to fuel buyers, it has also rendered some innocent and law abiding citizens homeless due to fire outbreak from jerry-can petrol storage.

He noted that fuel products such as petrol are highly flammable and if not stored and handled properly, an seriously endanger people, property and the environment.

While warning fuel attendants at filling stations to desist from selling petrol inside jerry-can/plastic container, the Inspector-General of Police said both the buyers and the sellers of the products will be arrested and prosecuted under the law.

The IGP, while assuring Nigerians of the Police readiness to fulfill its constitutional mandate, appealed for a more cordial relationship.

At this point I confused as to how the IGP expects Nigerians to survive with the epileptic light situation. The idea of carrying generator sets to filling stations is out of it for many people especially those who use very big ones. I believe laws are made to safeguard lives and ensure law and order, not to increase the suffering of Nigerians. This law however is appearing to do more of the latter because regular power supply is still a myth in most places in the country.  Do leave your comments.

Funny he had to issue this warrant when police pickups only buy fuel in Jerry cans. I fail to see how this will alleviate people’s problems.

I tire! This is ridiculous and not well thought out. Whilst we understand the hazards involved, it imposes greater suffering on the masses! How. Feasible is d implementation of this law other than to visit hardship on NIGERIANS?

Why can’t he order the arrest of the Fulani herdsmen that are into killing spree? He is only exhibiting his incompetence. How does he want people to fuel their generators? He even knows that police officers will even go extra mile to arrest anyone they see with gallon or Jerry can whether empty or not, whether big or small. Nigeria police will never stop to amaze us.

I don’t blame him for taking such drastic measures, the citizens themselves cause all these problems, they are not contempted at all, some of them goes to the filling station with five 50L kegs, it’s outrageous, is it for gen? Aba it’s just too much. Those area boys taking control of filling station, causing troubles.
I know we all have to fill our generators, and it’s inconvenient or impossible for us to take our gen to the station, for the main time get a little help removing your fuel tank so that you can fill them at the filling station.

I believe this order is to deter black market sellers. On the long run, it’s for our good. Let’s be patient with the law enforcement agencies in this moment of turbulence .

It is simply a stupid order because I do not really think there is a law in existense against buying of fuel in any container of your choice. Secondly, I have personally seen people buying fuel in generator tanks and immediately pour it in another container to stockpile because they cannot afford to be coming to the fuel station everyday when they are not even sure of the availability of the said product the next day.

Let’s call a spade what it is, this current government is insensitive. We need an affirmative action to allievating the plight of the populace and not to be adding more to it while giveing propaganda as excuses. #Idon’tStandWithBuhariOnThis.
