A man of God who owns a network of churches and a vast arable land for farming has finally realised his dream of developing and marketing cars “Made in Ghana”.

It’s been in the pipeline since 1971,” said Kwadwo Safo Jnr, a son of the inventor. According to him,”it started with the old man, so it’s been a long time coming.

Safo Snr started his family business, Kantaka, 20 years ago, making electrical devices from TVs and sound systems to musical instruments and sewing machines in a country with virtually no history of manufacturing. Today, Kantanka Group is split into an electronics division and a car manufacturing company — Ghana’s first car-maker and are doing quite well.

His 30-year old son,Kwado Safe jr is now the chief executive officer of Kantanka Group who has finally gotten the breakthrough to make head way into the market after so many hue and cries for attention and support from the Ghanian government and even the Presidency who have placed orders for a series of his vehicles as a means of empowering young visionary entrepreneurs in Ghana.

The company’s range of sports cars and pick-up trucks range from $18,000 to $35,000 and looks like it’s  tough enough to stand next to established brands like Toyota, Mercedes, BMW which see an importation of about 12,000 new and 100,000 second-hand cars imported every year.

Its going to be really tough but Kwadwo Safo is confident and excited that the demand is there and the firm can hold its own in the competition.
