A suit is hands down one of the most essential outfits an entrepreneur, or any man for that matter, should have. Whether it’s for typical business meetings, networking at events, or pitching in front of investors, an man has to look clean and professional- a little bit of style wouldn’t hurt either. Here are 5 tips from our friends in the suit industry that every man should follow.

1. DON’T WEAR A SUIT MORE EXPENSIVE THAN YOUR SUPERIORS.

Stop showing off – You Are Not James Bond

In many cases, younger employees may have a bit more flair than their older superiors do, purely out of youth and fashion. However, working in front of your superiors may be the wrong time to show off how stylish you are. For those who can afford Hugo Boss and Armani, as a matter of basic respect, don’t outshine your boss at the work place. Your business is not a party and your boss isn’t a beautiful woman you are trying to toast. And if it is, where do you work??

2. REAL BUSINESS SUITS COME IN THREE COLORS: BLACK, BLUE, CHARCOAL AND GREY.

Some jokers like to wear flashy and bright colored suits as a way to get attention in business. Unless your business is the circus and you are a clown, this is a suit fail. If you are wearing a real business suit, black, blue charcoal and gray are the only colors you need. Darker shaded suits might seem modest, but if it’s nicely fitted, you’ll still look sharp and perfect for business.
3. THE BOLDEST COLOR TIE IS RED.

If you aren’t getting the hint by now, a business suit isn’t about being flashy. The tie on your suit is no different. As a rule of thumb, your tie should never be lighter than the shirt you are wearing, which should either be blue or white, and maybe creme depending on your suit. For ties, you can never go wrong with black, blue, some subtle greens, or a bold red; a matching shirt and tie for the monochromatic look isn’t bad either. Just make sure the fabric of your tie, usually silk, matches with the fabric of your suit, that the color combo doesn’t clash, and you are set.

4. CASUAL DRESS FRIDAYS DOESN’T MEAN T-SHIRT AND JEANS.

Does a pair of jeans and an untucked collared shirt sound like casual Friday to you? A real Casual Friday calls for a casual suit. A casual suit isn’t a business suit. It can be more colorful and the material doesn’t need to look as refined, though it should still be comfortable. If you decide to wear a shirt and tie under the jacket, the tie can be worn loose. Business, no matter what day of the week it is, is best done in a suit.

5. DON’T TAKE YOUR JACKET OFF UNTIL YOUR SUPERIOR(S) DOES.

Eye-contact, firm handshake, sitting down only after your boss does- these are all points of etiquette during business meetings.  The same rules apply for your suit.  As you sit, unbutton your jacket, but only remove it if your boss does.  It isn’t considered respectful to cozy up and make yourself at home in your boss’s office unless he does.
