Six people have been killed and eight more wounded after gunmen opened fire in a mosque in Quebec City, Canada, on Sunday evening during prayer.

Earlier, a witness said that up to three gunmen fired on about 40 worshipers inside the Quebec City Islamic Cultural Center around 8pm local time. Quebec City Police have confirmed two people were arrested in connection to the attack. One of them was reportedly apprehended at the site and the other after a chase ending near l’île d’Orléans a distance away. Witnesses also said the masked shooters shouted ‘Allahu akbar’ in what sounded like a Quebecois accent.

The deadly shooting unfolded following a weekend which has seen Trump’s divisive and controversial ‘Muslim immigration ban‘ spark widespread protests across America. It sparked Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to remark that his country remains open to all immigration.

Trudeau wrote on Twitter after the attack: ‘Tonight, Canadians grieve for those killed in a cowardly attack on a mosque in Quebec City. My thoughts are with victims & their families.’
