Frank Lampard is set to beapproached about becoming part of the Football Association’s coaching set-up.

The new England manager Gareth Southgate is on board with the idea of encouraging big-name former players to move into coaching at the Three Lions’ St George’s Park base.

FA chiefs are keen to tap into the knowledge of stars such as Lampard — as long as they are fully committed to coaching and gaining all their necessary qualifications.

The 38-year-old former West Ham, Chelsea and England midfielder Lampard, capped 106 times, announced his retirement as a player on Thursday – and is believed to be interested in coaching as well as TV work.

Southgate paid a glowing tribute to Lampard, saying: “You only have to look at his list of honours to see the level he reached, and his goal-scoring record as a midfield player is remarkable.

“What’s more, I can’t remember anyone in recent times who scored so many of their goals from outside the penalty box.

“Frank had tremendous pride in playing for England and was one of those players prepared to put himself in the firing line, even in the difficult times, hence his huge achievement in receiving over 100 caps.”

It is great to see English Football Legends take up coaching role. There have been dearth of English Coach in the top flight.Southgate’s idea is top notch and fully welcome with open arms….
