Justice Served! Military Court Sentences Two Soldiers Who Brutalized Crippled Man In Onitsha

The Nigerian Army has demoted and imprisoned two soldiers that tortured a physically challenged man in Onitsha last Tuesday.

This was revealed in a statement posted on the Facebook page of the Nigerian Presidency and signed by the spokesperson of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier Sani Usman, late on Friday.

A video clip of two soldiers brutally assaulting the physically challenged man went viral after it was shared on social media. The army had promptly responded that the culprits have been identified and arrested and are being court-martialed.

On Friday afternoon, the physically Challenged man, Chijioke Uraku, was invited to the 302 artillery regiment, where he was met by the commander of the regiment Col, Idongesit Akpan and the Deputy Director, Public Relation of the Nigerian Army, Col. Musa Sagir. He was reportedly given a cash gift and items of clothing.

In the statement released later on Friday night, the army revealed the identity of the soldiers who tortured the man and the punishment meted out to them.

The soldiers, Corporal Bature Samuel and Corporal Abdulazeez Usman of the 82 provost Company, were demoted to the rank of private soldiers and were imprisoned for 21 days with hard labour. They were to also forfeit their wages during the time they will be in jail.

the army also confirmed that it had reached out to Mr Uraku.

“Sequel to the video clip of two soldiers maltreating a physically challenged man on the streets of Onitsha, Anambra State, last Tuesday, in line with our zero tolerance of infringement of human rights by troops, those involved; Corporal Bature Samuel and Corporal Abdulazeez Usman of 82 Provost Company, have been arrested, summarily tried based on 2 count charges and found guilty.

“We wish to reiterate our avowed determination to ensure that troops conduct themselves in the most orderly and professional manner at all times. Any act of indiscipline would not be tolerated.”
