World’s First Solar Powered Plane Arrives Egypt
The Swiss-made solar-powered aircraft arrived at Cairo International Airport early Wednesday 13/7/2016 after a flight of approx. 2,200 miles coming from Spain as part of its round-the world flight set off in March of 2015.
The journey around the world meant to draw world attention to the importance of sustainable energy.
The zero-fuel plane will remain at the airport runway for 15 days as a special tent was erected to house the aircraft during its Cairo stay.
Then, it will leave for Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates where the trip around the world began in March 2015.
The wings of the aircraft are wider than those of a Boeing 747 and hold 17,000 solar cells that power propellers and charge batteries.
The plane stores energy during the day to run on at night.
It is a single seated aircraft, piloted in turns by two Swiss aviators, Andre Borschberg and Bertrand Piccard.
The Swiss Embassy will organize a reception ceremony for the plane where a large number of Egyptian officials will inspect the aircraft.
