This is very exciting news for me and even Nigerian sport lovers as a whole.

Team Nigeria’s Chierika Ukogu has qualified for the semi-finals of the Women’s Single Sculls Rowing event at the ongoing Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

For many, the country is gradually itching towards her first medal at the ongoing Rio Olympics and this is coming from an unlikely source.

Ukogu, 24, is the first Nigerian to represent the country in Rowing and she is very keen to go all the away in Rio.
The athlete, who is also a graduate of Stanford University, was grouped alongside two other Africans in her quarter final race.

Ukogu finished fifth in Quarterfinal 3 and although she was initially ruled to have been knocked out, the Nigerian was called back.

There is also a steady improvement in her finishing time during the heats and quarter finals. She finished in a time of 8min 45 seconds during the heats but improved to 7mins 54 seconds in the quarter finals.

The 24-year-old will now compete in Semifinal C/D 1 scheduled for Thursday, August 10, 3:30PM (Nigerian time).

So excited. Go team Nigeria Go!!!
