RE: 14 Student Union Leaders Arrested And Tortured By The Nigeria Police
The attention of the Lagos State Police Command has been drawn to a publication by an online media called SaharaReporters on the above subject matter.
The Command wishes to state that the report did not in anyway represent fact and it is just concoction of fallacies with intent to discredit the police and pitch the members of the public against the Force.
The command will restrain itself from joining issues with anyone or group of people who cooked up the fiction and present them as though they are real, but for the purpose of well meaning Nigerians who may wish to know what really transpired, it will put the record straight.
THE FACT OF THE STORY:
Yesterday 10th October at about 1.30pm, some group of students which preliminary investigations revealed are not students of UNILAG arrived Unilag road by Cemetery, in four different buses with the intent to invade Unilag campus, in order to disrupt the on going examination process.The Command’s operatives from Area C command and Yaba division who got wind of the move prevented them from advancing, an action which spontaneously angered the protesters, and they subsequently attacked the Policemen. In the process one Cpl Bassey Okon was beaten and his uniform shredded to pieces, consequently 14 of them were apprehended and taken to SCIID Panti.
Investigations revealed that majority of the students are from Lagos State College of Education,Ijanikin and that they were heading to University of Lagos,to disrupt the activities of the University and it’s environs in support of the rusticated students of the institution.
Action Taken: At the SCIID,the students were advised to be of good behaviours and to stay clear of formenting troubles, they signed letters of undertaking to maintain peace and were subsequently released to their parents/guardian.
At no point was any of the students maltreated nor rough handled even at the height of their provocative display of truancy.
The Command wishes to state that it will not allow any group of people or individual, under whatever guise to breakdown law and order or breach any peace within the state as it remains resolute in protecting and securing the students who are studying hard to secure a future for themselves.
