Accountant Arrested For Defrauding Bank
A 39-year-old accountant with one of the old generation banks, Okonye Chukwuemeke, was yesterday arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court in Lagos, for stealing N8 million, property of the bank. The defendant is facing a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and stealing, preferred against him by the police.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Cyriacus Osuji, told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offence in October at the Marina head office of the bank in Lagos.
According to the prosecutor, the offence committed is punishable under Sections 409 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge, and Magistrate A. Omoyole granted him N1 million bail with two sureties. One of the sureties, he said, must be gainfully employed with their addresses verified; they are to show evidence of two years tax payment clearance to Lagos State government.
The case was adjourned to January 19, 2017 for mention.
