La La Land Leads 2017 Oscar Nominations With A Record-tying 14 Nods (See Full List)
La La Land looks set to dance its way to victory at the biggest night in Hollywood after picking up a record-tying 14 Oscars nominations for the 89th Academy Awards.
The smash-hit musical – led by Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling – picked up the most nods on Tuesday, and tied the record set by Titanic and All About Eve.
The picture now has a chance to beat the record 11 Oscars that have been won by Ben-Hur, Titanic and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
Thankfully one year after #OscarsSoWhite controversy, seven of the 20 actors nominated for awards were non-white. There was not a single non-white acting nominee in 2016.
Veteran actress Meryl Streep who is nominated for best actress for her role in Florence Foster Jenkins also received her record 20th Oscar nomination, 37 years after she was first nominated for her supporting turn in The Deer Hunter.
This year’s nominees were announced by past Oscar winners Brie Larson and Jennifer Hudson and as well as past nominees Glenn Close and Ken Watanabe at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills on Tuesday
La La Land has already been the biggest success of awards season, winning over critics and cinema-goers alike.
The film swept the Golden Globe Awards with a record-breaking seven awards for Best Original Score Motion Picture, Best Original Song Motion Picture categories, Best Screenplay Motion Picture and Best Director Motion Picture.
Gosling and Stone each accepted the Best Performance by an Actor and Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy while the musical as a whole took the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy award for a clean sweep of seven gongs.
It follows their success at this year’s Critics’ Choice Awards, in which it won eight of the 12 awards that it was put forward for while it is also up for a whopping 11 gongs at the BAFTAs.
The Oscar hopefuls are chosen by the 6028 voting members of the Academy. Actors wanting to be part of the coveted group must have credited roles in at least three films while directors must have more than two screen credits to their names.
