Tributes Pour In As Man United Fan Who Collapsed During West Ham Match Dies
A Manchester United fan died after collapsing as the Red Devils played West Ham.
Ronnie Greenwood, 71, was taken ill during the match, which kicked off at 5.15pm yesterday at the London Stadium.
He received CPR in the stands but later died.
The Met Police this morning confirmed the lifelong United fan’s death, while both clubs paid tribute.
The Met’s football unit wrote on its Twitter page: “Unfortunately the @ManUtd supporter who collapsed @LondonStadium has passed away, condolences to his family/friends at this sad time.”
Greenwood’s nephew confirmed his identity on the Facebook fan group The True Red Devils.
He posted: “He was my uncle, Ronnie Greenwood died aged 71 he had been a United fan since a young boy following utd home and away he will be greatly missed”
He added: “forever a red.”
Manchester United said it was “deeply saddened” by the news.
The club said: “Everyone at Manchester United is deeply saddened following news one of our fans passed away after collapsing at yesterday’s game v West Ham.”
West Ham added: “West Ham are saddened by the passing of an MUFC supporter taken ill during WHUMUN. The thoughts of the Club are with his family & friends.”
Manchester United went on to beat West Ham 2-0 in front of a crowd of 57,000.
