Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu Lead Delegation To South Africa Over Xenophobia Attacks
The Senate has named a seven-man delegation to South Africa to investigate the ongoing xenophobic attacks against Nigerians and other nationals in the country.
This was disclosed during Wednesday’s plenary by President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, in response to the growing tensions between the two nations over the wave of attacks, Vanguard writes.
Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu will lead the delegation, which includes Leader of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan; and the Chief Whip, Senator Sola Adeyeye.
Others members of the delegation are Deputy Chairman, Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Senator Shehu Sani; Senator Stella Oduah, Senator Magnus Abe and Senator Shaba Lafiaji.
A recent rise in xenophobia among South Africans has seen Nigerians attacked, injured and their businesses destroyed.
The decision by the Senate comes in the wake of a similar move by the House of Reps to send a six-man team, headed by majority leader Femi Gbajagbiamila to interface with the South African parliament on the attacks.
It would be recalled that the Senate on Tuesday, condemned in strong terms the extra-judicial killings of Nigerians by both the South African police and South Africans.
The Red chamber also advised the federal government to reconsider Nigeria’s diplomatic ties with South Africa with a view to arresting the unsavoury development.
