Isn’t This Another Proof That Education In Nigeria Worthless?
At a time when the winner of the ongoing Big Brother Nigeria is expecting N25m prize money, in addition to a brand new Kia Sorento SUV and recording contracts, the Paediatrics Association of Nigeria seems to have confirmed the popular impression that education in Nigeria is not accorded much honour.
The association, which sponsors the Best Student in Paediatrics award at the University of Port Harcourt, has not thought it fit to increase the prize money from an inconsequential and belittling N250, which is less than 50 cents when converted to the dollar.
Miss Joy Omubo, being the Best Graduating Student in Paediatrics for the 2014/2015 academic year, had received the prize money at the institution’s 31st convocation ceremony which held from March 17-25.
The prize was donated by the Paediatrics Association of Nigeria.
A twitter user who claimed to have graduated in the same set as Miss Omubo, Dr. Tuoyo Fregene (@ty_Fregz) had tweeted, “The best student in Paediatrics from my set back in sch was given her prize money today. Paediatric association of Nigeria gave her 250naira.”
The tweet has attracted mixed reactions from Nigerians.
