Michael Essien’s Wife Buys Out Italian Football Club, Como
Wife of Ghanaian midfielder Michael Essien has purchased an Italian third tier club, Como for the sum of N110m (£206,000).
Calcio Como S.r.l. is an Italian football club, based in Como. The club was founded in 1907. The team’s colour is blue.
According to the club, Essien’s wife Akosua Puni Essien splashed N110m (£206,000) at an auction for the bankrupt club.
“The new owner and her team wish to make both the first team and the youth team grow,” the club said.
“They will put their efforts into creating conditions to take the team back to Serie B and to develop the club’s young talents.”
Puni, a businesswoman, bought the club without any completion at the auction.
“Mrs Puni Essien and her team will soon be in our city to meet the fans and supporters of the club,” a club statement read.
Puni was Michael Essien’s publicist before they got married in 2013 and is also currently head of the Michael Essien Foundation, set up by the former Chelsea, Milan and Real Madrid star help the poor in his Ghana.
She has three kids with the former Black Stars of Ghana captain.
Como have had several short stints in Serie A, the longest being from 1984 to 1989.
They played in Italy’s top football division in the 2002-03 when they were relegated after one season.
