Some residents of Lagos State have lamented that the flooding which ravaged some parts of the state had displaced them, calling on the government for succour.

A heavy rain on Friday and Saturday had left hundreds of homes and roads flooded in the Ajah, Lekki, Victoria Island and Ikoyi areas of Lagos State.

The flood caused gridlock on major roads, while many residents were trapped in their homes.

Some commuters, who were stranded at bus stops, were reported to have paid touts as much as N1,000 to carry them across the flood to their destinations.

Information gathered that many residents had been rendered homeless or stranded.

Among those who would also not forget the flood was a Lagos couple reported to be returning from their wedding when they were stuck in the water.

The rain had yet to subside in many parts of the Lagos Island as of Sunday afternoon.

The General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Adeshina Tiamiyu, said the government was working hard to bring succour to those affected by the flood.

“This is also the time for residents to pay more attention to their environment. People should avoid blocking drainage channels, ” he added.

Meanwhile, some  communities in Ibadan, Oyo State, experienced flooding on Sunday as a result of a heavy rain that started at about 11am and  continued for about five hours.

Our correspondent learnt that there was flooding in the Odo-Ona Kekere, Arapaja, Akala Way and Gbekuba areas of the city.

In Odo-Ona Kekere, it was gathered that water flooded some houses by the river bank, which resulted in occupants moving out.

The South-West Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency, Yakubu Suleyman, said, “What is happening in Ibadan cannot be compared with the situation in Lagos. The Ibadan office has not notified me, which means that the situation is not out of hand there.”

Secretary of the Oyo State Emergency Management Agency, Akin Makinde, confirmed the flooding, adding that there was no casualty.

“There were cases of flooding in the Akala area of Orita Challenge and some other areas. There is no casualty, but we are still inspecting the areas,” he said.
