Monkey Pox Hits Lagos, Two Suspected Cases Recorded
– Two suspected cases of Monkey pox virus has been record in Lagos state
– Health commissioner Jide Idris revealed the discovery at a press conference on Monday
– Members of the public warned to take precaution
– Monkey pox was first discovered from Monkeys but can be gotten from other animals
– Symptoms include severe headache, fever, back pain, among others.
The Lagos State Government has revealed that two suspected cases of Monkey Pox have been recorded in the state.
The commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris disclosed this at a news conference on Monday, saying that the two suspected cases were currently being investigated in the state.
“Though no confirmed case has been recorded, there is need to sensitise members of the public and provide adequate information on measures for prevention and control of the disease in line with the policy of the State government,” he said.
Monkeypox as a viral illness caused by a group of viruses that include chickenpox and smallpox.
The first case was noticed in the Democratic Republic of Congo and subsequent outbreaks in West Africa.
The virus in Nigeria is the West African type which is milder than other types and has had no records of mortality.
The virus was first seen in monkeys but can also be found in all bush animals, such as rats, squirrels and antelopes.
Symptoms of monkeypox as severe headache, fever, back pain, among others.
The most worrisome of all the signs however are rashes bigger than those caused by chickenpox.
The said rashes are usually very discomforting and spread to the whole body of an infected person.
The index case from Agbura, Bayelsa where somebody was purported to have killed and eaten a monkey and after that the people who are neighbours and families started developing the rashes.
The airborne viral disease then spread to Akwa Ibom state before the two suspected cases in Lagos.
