Ian Squire, the 57 year old British optician kidnapped in Nigeria was shot dead after playing ‘Amazing Grace’ on his acoustic guitar, his fellow hostages said.
The deceased’s final moments were described by christian charity workers David and Shirley Donovan, who were abducted from their accommodation in Delta State in the wee hours of October 13.
They were held hostage with the deceased and Alanna Carson as the four were working as missionary medics in West Africa. Dr Donavan, 57, told how the group’s spirit was lifted when the kidnappers returned a guitar and Mr Squire played Amazing Grace.
He said:
“it was the perfect song, and at that point things began to look not quite as bad. but then, after Ian finished playing, he stood up and a salvo of shots killed him instantly.”
