There was excitement in Amufie and Umachi communities in Igbo- Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State last week following the presentation of N20 million for water and electricity in the areas.

The projects are sponsored by the World Bank in collaboration with the Enugu State Government, through the state’s Agency for Community and Social Development Project, CSDP.

Dr Maximus Asogwa commended the state government for keying into the project, while urging the benefiting communities to make judicious use of the funds. Asogwa said:

We are here to release the first tranche, being 50 per cent of the over N10 million earmarked for the projects. You should show seriousness and complete the water project in good time so as to commence work on energisation and extension of electricity. “Our coming here is just to fulfill one of the things expected of the agency by the development partners and we assure you that once this water project is completed, we will also commence work on your second project which is electricity extension and energisation.

He further asked the communities to start work immediately to ensure potable water for the rural people just as he called for transparency and accountability by members of the Community Project Management Committee, CPMC, in the execution of the projects, warning that every stage of the jobs would be supervised to avoid complications.

“We understand that the borehole in Amufie is a very big one compared to what they used to have before. The rehabilitation cost is as big as digging new one.

You can come and collect another money when you finish the first tranche of the money.

We hope that the project will be completed within the next few months to provide drinking water for the community,” Asogwa added.

In their separate reactions, both the traditional ruler of Amufie Autonomous Community, Igwe Lawrence Ossai and the President-General, Amufie Town Union, Mr. Johnson Odo, commended the state governor, Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for providing democracy dividends to communities across the state.

They noted that Ugwanyi had “only spent three years but development has entered every community in the state,” adding that, “before the end of his second term, Enugu will be developed like London.
