#100NairaNotes : Digital Media Practitioners Of Nigeria Shed Light On Bad Notes In Circulation, Advocate For Better Handling Of The Naira
Over the past few months, there has been a very rapid decline in the quality of 100Naira notes in circulation. The situation today come to a head after members of the Association of Digital Media Influencers took to micro blogging social networking site Twitter to advocate for better notes and encourage Nigerians to exercise a higher level of care while handling not just 100 Naira notes but the Naira as a whole.
The Association made up of Nigeria’s top social media Influencers and Digital media Practitioners took the lead in calling of Nigeria’s apex bank- the Central bank to do something the horrid notes in circulation. The campaign opened a barrage of conversions with many Nigerians expressing censure over the notes and sharing shocking photos of some of the N100 notes in circulation. Indeed the notes were an eye sore.
A Country’s currency is a representation of the Nation locally abroad and with the state of the N100 notes in circulation, it brings to question what state the nation is in. Also from the conversations on Twitter many questions were asked: Are there no materials to mint new 100 Naira notes? Why is it only 100 Naira notes that are in such dilapidated state when other notes are better? What is the Central bank doing about it?
The health hazards associated with handling such old and filthy notes are innumerable. Imagine the battalion of harmful microorganisms that have made those notes their homes as they are being passed from hand to hand. Imagine that some not too educated women put these notes in their bra. Imagine also a child who touches such notes and still eats with the same hand. Indeed the health hazards are numerous.
Here is hoping the CBN listens to the clamour by Nigerians to do something about these notes, and also Nigerians do better with the handling of the Naira to preserve it more.
