This evening, Hollywood’s awards season hits its apex, as the 90th annual Academy Awards ceremony airs. From the moment the nominations were announced in January, this year’s awards were poised to be a battle: Guillermo del Toro’s fantasy The Shape of Waterled the pack with 13 nominations, while Christopher Nolan’s wartime epic Dunkirk came in with eight.

Right behind with seven nominations was Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, anchored by Frances McDormand’s standout (and Oscar-nominated) performance, while Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread and the Gary Oldman vehicle Darkest Hour came in tied with six nominations each.

But outside the big-name nominees, this year’s field also offered up the opportunity for some truly transformative Oscar moments. Greta Gerwig’s Best Director nomination puts her in the running to be only the second female director to win the award in Oscar history, while a win for Mudbound cinematographer Rachel Morrison would make her the first woman in history to win the category.
