A female Professor of Neurology, Njideka Okubadejo, has raised the alarm about the prevalence of neurological disorders in Nigerian, revealing that every two minutes, a Nigerian dies of stroke.
Njideka Okubadejo is Nigeria’s first female Neurologist.
Professor Okubadejo spoke yesterday at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), when she delivered her inaugural lecture. The lecture was titled;
“Strokes of Movement and Trips: Strategic Opportunism as an Approach to Improve Neurological Care in Africa.”
She called on relevant stakeholders to improve sensitisation and education of the populace, even as she urged the government to promote and support the care of neurological crisis.
Okubadejo also linked the challenges of irregular signature and poor handwriting to medical issues of tremor, which she noted could lead to Parkinson Disease.
This was as the former Governor of Abia State and Founder of Orji Uzor Kalu Foundation, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, has said it is the responsibility of every wealthy and philanthropic Nigerians to support the nation’s ivory towers, towards producing more professionals like Okubadejo.
He has, therefore, listed four universities including Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), University of Ibadan, University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, to benefit from his Foundation’s financial support and partnerships.
The former governor, who was the guest of the inaugural lecturer, said this at the office of the UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, noting that the listed beneficiary institutions are apart from the University of Calabar, Cross River State and the University of Nigeria (UNN), Nsukka, which he said have always been supported immensely by the Foundation.
He said:
“We must appreciate this university for keeping the legacies of the past alive. As I entered the university, I saw everywhere painted and I exclaimed that this should be one of the very few public universities that have remained beautiful.
“I appreciate the management for sustaining this old institution. We understand very perfectly that all these require money, and I feel we must support this university to produce more products to impact our society. Our Foundation has pencilled down UNILAG as one of the four to benefit from our support.
Earlier in his welcome address on behalf of the VC, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Management Services, Prof. Ben Oghojafor, thanked the former governor for finding the university worthy of support. He promised that whatever gesture extended to the institution would be adequately guarded.
