Fake Soldier Nabbed In Ogun State

Abayomi Akanji, who reportedly stole an army uniform from an army barracks, which he reportedly used to terrorise residents of Adatan Community in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has been arrested by the Ogun State Police who paraded him alongside two accomplices – Adebayo Oladimeji and Lawal Akinmoye.Akanji.

The suspects who were arrested on charges of impersonation, reportedly used the army uniform during the period of the fuel scarcity to harass people and create panic. The suspects’ arrest came after operatives from the Adatan Police Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Olajide Joshua who were on a routine patrol accosted Akanji on April 17, 2018, and while he was being questioned, he owned up to being a fake soldier.

Punch reported that the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the arrest in a statement on Thursday, said Akanji led detectives to his accomplices.

“The suspects have been terrorising residents of Adatan, Bode Olude and other communities under the pretence of being personnel of the Nigerian Army. Their activities were at the peak during the fuel crisis when they dressed up in full army uniform with which they harassed people at various fuel stations.

“The police accosted the first suspect, Abayomi Akanji, in full military uniform without a name tag. His appearance looked suspicious and that prompted the policemen to put some questions to him. But he was unable to give good and satisfactory account of himself as a soldier.

“He was promptly arrested and taken to the station. On interrogation, he confessed to being a fake soldier and that he stole the uniform in an army barracks which he visits frequently” he said.

The PPRO said the other two suspects were arrested on April 24, adding that an army uniform, a Nigerian Army folder, a fez cap and vests were recovered from them.
