A 14-year-old girl, whose names the police withheld, has said her mother refused to believe her when she reported to her how her 58-year-old father raped her while she, the mother, was away from home.
In a report by daily Trust, the girl said at the Gender Unit of the Lagos police command that she had to run away from home and seek refuge in her friend’s home in order to save herself from the humiliation she faced from her mother consequent upon what she told her.
“I never believed in my wildest imagination that my mother would not believe me. Rather, she warned me not to tell anybody. I ran away because my mom failed to take any action,” she said at the Gender unit of the command.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, who paraded the suspect before newsmen yesterday, said that the Gender Unit was still investigating the defilement allegation against the girl’s father, Johnson Okon, a security guard and commercial motorcycle operator of Charismatic Road, Abule, Berger, Ikorodu.
Edgal described as painful that a woman who claimed to be a mother would not believe her daughter when she reported an incident as serious as defilement to her.
“The girl has been referred to Mirabel Centre for medical examination,” he added.
