The Oscar nominations were announced on Tuesday morning in Los Angeles, with super stars and superheroes leading the list of this year’s nominees.
Roma led the pack with 10 nominations, including four nods for director and writer Alfanso Cuaron, tying with The Favourite. It also became the first Netflix movie to be nominated for best picture.
Lady Gaga grabbed two nominations, and will take on six-time nominee Glenn Close as both women hope to walk home with their first Oscar when the winners are announced on February 24 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.
The film also earned an acting nod for star Bradley Cooper, who was not nominated for Best Director.
And for the first time in history, a superhero film is up for Best Picture.
Black Panther picked up seven nominations overall, and will battle with Star is Born, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Green Book, BlacKkKlansman, Roma and Vice for Best Picture.

Superheroes also did well in the animated feature category, where Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is up against Incredibles 2, Isle of Dogs, Mira and Ralph Breaks the Internet.
The Supporting Actor category will pit the men who won the award in the same category the past two years against one another, as Mahershala Ali (Green Book) and Sam Rockwell (Vice) take on Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), Sam Elliott (A Star Is Born) and Adam Driver (BlacKkKlansman).
It was big morning for Roma star Marina de Tavira, who was a surprise addition to the Best Supporting Actress lineup, joining rivals Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz (The Favourite), six-time nominee Amy Adams (Vice) and frontrunner Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk).
There was a bit is a surprise in the Best Actor category as well, with Willem Dafoe (At Eternity’s Gate) managing to sneak in to join Christian Bale (Vice), Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody), Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born) and Viggo Mortensen (Green Book).
Dafoe had been an early frontrunner during last year’s Oscar race for his work in The Florida Project, but slowly lost momentum as eventual winner Rockwell surged ahead thanks to his work in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
In the actress category, Roma breakout Yalitza Aparicio will join Close, Gaga, Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) and critical darling Olivia Colman (The Favourite).
Eight of the 20 acting honorees scored their first nominations on Tuesday, including Driver, de Tavara, King, Grant, Malek and Aparicio.
Hollywood legend Elliott is up for his first Oscar at the age of 74, more than 30 years after his breakout performance opposite Cher in Mask.
And Colman, who will soon be seen as Queen Elizabeth in season three of The Crown, is also a first-time nominee.
Her royal predecessor on the Netflix series, Claire Foy, just missed out in the Best Supporting Actress category for her work in First Man.
There are also five previous winners among this year’s nominees in the acting categories: Ali, Rockwell, Bale, Stone and Weisz.
Close meanwhile made history on Tuesday as the most nominated actor to have never won an Academy Award, picking up her seventh nod.
Not far behind is six-time nominee Adams and five-time acting nominee Cooper.
Gaga is hoping to keep Close’s losing streak alive, and has increased her chances of a win next month with a second nomination in the Best Original Song category.
Her Grammy-nominated hit Shallow is up against Kendrick Lamar’s All the Stars from Black Panther, The Place Where Lost Things Go from Mary Poppins Returns, When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings from The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and the Jennifer Hudson anthem I’ll Fight from The Notorious RBG.
I’ll Fight is now the ninth nomination for Diane Warren in the Best Original Song category, which she has never won.
Her last nomination came in 2016, for her work alongside then-first-time-nominee Gaga on the song Til It Happens to You from The Hunting Ground.
In the Best Director category, the absence of Cooper cleared the way for Pawel Pawlikowski (Cold War), who is competing against Spike Lee (BlacKkKlansman) , Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite), Adam McKay (Vice) and Cuaron, who has dominated the awards circuit this year.
Should Spike Lee win, he will become the first black to win the Best Director nod.
