K-pop star Sulli, formerly of the band f(x), has been found dead at her home in what is said to be a suspected suicide.

The 25-year-old singer and actress was found dead by her manager on Monday afternoon around 3:30pm at her home in Sujeong-gu, Seongnam in the Gyeonggi province of South Korea, Police say.
According to the Police, her manager went to her house when he couldn’t contact her. On finding her body, he called the Parademics who arrived at 3.39pm, where they found Sulli dead on arrival.

A police official told Yonhap:
‘Choi seemed to have lived alone in the house. ‘It seems that she took her own life but we are also looking into other possibilities.’ SM Entertainment said in a statement: ‘We apologise for conveying such sad and unfortunate news. Sulli has left our side. ‘We cannot believe the situation now and we are just filled with grief. ‘For her family who is grieving after the sudden news of her passing, we earnestly request that you refrain from writing speculative articles or spreading rumours. We express our deep condolences.’

The singer, real name Choi Jin-ri, suspended her K-pop career in 2014 after struggling with receiving abuse online. Sulli returned to acting the following year but left f(x). Sulli first came to fame in 2005 aged just 11 when she played Princess Seonhwa of Silla in the SBS drama Ballad of Seodong. The blossoming star auditioned for SM Entertainment and became a trainee, sharing a dorm with Taeyeon and Tiffany of Girls’ Generation.

Sulli debuted as a member of the girl band f(x) alongside bandmates Victoria, Amber, Luna and Krystal in September 2009 with the single La Cha Ta. The Busan-born star had success with the girlband with songs including Pinocchio (Danger), Electric Shock and Hot Summer, but on 24 July 2014, it was announced Sulli would be taking a hiatus from the group. However, in August 2015, it was confirmed Sulli had officially withdrawn from f(x).

Just four months ago, Sulli made her solo debut with Goblin, Sailor Moon and Dorothy on the single album Goblin, and had a special stage at SM Town Theatre in Seoul on 29 June. She also featured on Dean’s track Dayfly in 2018.

While she took a step back from music, Sulli continued to act while in f(x) and after quitting the band, appearing in the films The Pirates, Fashion King and Real and the TV dramas To The Beautiful You and Hotel Del Luna. Sulli won the Best New Star award at the SBS Drama Awards in 2012 for her role as Goo Jae-hee in To The Beautiful You.

In 2017, she said that she could see acting as her lifelong career, telling Grazia:

‘I do think lately that I could be an actress for the rest of my life. I’ve been thinking that I match very well to “this place”. I used to believe that I didn’t. ‘I would look at people who were different from me, and think, “I won’t make it. Those people are the ones who should be celebrities.” But recently, I’ve been thinking, “Actually, that’s not true. There’s a place for me too.” I have a bit more confidence, and I feel more of a sense of achievement and responsibility to my work now.

Sulli previously opened up about her panic disorder and social phobia, saying in a teaser for her reality show Jinri Store last year:

‘Social phobia, panic disorder…. I’ve had panic disorder ever since I was young. ‘There were times when close people… Some of my closest friends have left me. People hurt me, so everything fell apart. I didn’t feel like I had anyone on my side or anyone who could understand me. So that’s why I completely fell apart.’

Korean pop music — or K-pop — is one of the country’s biggest exports in the past decade.
Many of its stars — known as idols — train for years, honing their singing, dancing and acting skills, while also learning other Asian languages, before they are even allowed to debut their first song.
Stars of the genre are subject to intense pressure, which has been linked to a mental health crisis in the industry.

Sulli’s last Instagram post came just a day ago, when she shared a video of a gift from the bag range Stretch Angels.

She was good friends with K-pop star Jonghyun, who took his own life aged 27 and paid tribute at his funeral in 2017.

Police  said found a note at her apartment but are yet to analyse its contents.
