The Plateau State Police Command has said gunmen, suspected to be herdsmen, on Thursday, have killed 12 people during an attack on Kunben village in Kombun District of Mangu Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, Terna Tyopev, made this known to newsmen in the state capital,Jos.
In his statement, Mr. Tyopev explained that the attack which took place in the early hours of Thursday also left some villagers with various degrees of injury.
He further expressed that the injured villagers were receiving treatment at the General Hospital in Mangu, adding that;
Immediately we received the information, the commissioner in charge of the command, Mr Isaac Akinmoyede, directed the DCP in charge of Operations, Mr Aliyu Tafida to mobilise to the scene.
The police spokesperson called on residents of the community to remain calm and law abiding, saying the police have deployed security personnel in the area to prevent any breakdown of law and order, while investigation was ongoing.
He assured residents that the perpetrators will be arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law.
During his visit to Kunben, the state governor, Simon Lalong, condemned the attack saying it was unacceptable but urged residents to stay calm while security agencies handle the case.
