Miss Amaka Nweke has been beaten to death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nweke for dating a Muslim Yoruba boy and having a child for him.
Reports say the incident had led to outrage among residents of Agility community at Mile 12 area of Lagos, where the victim was living with her parents.
Mr. and Mrs. Nweke who hail from the Southeast region of the country, were said to have become more furious after they learnt their daughter had gotten pregnant for her boyfriend, Ibrahim Lawal.
According to further report, Amaka’s parents were alleged to have repeatedly subjected her to torture, including starving her during pregnancy.
The deceased and her boyfriend were said to have met when she was in Senior Secondary School (SSS), and their relationship led to her getting pregnant.
She was delivered of a baby boy named Zaeed, however, eyewitness reports revealed that Amaka was brutally maltreated by her parents during the pregnancy.
A lady who identified herself as Adebola, said;
Amaka went through a lot. She really suffered. Whenever her parents were beating her, some of us would approach and beg them to stop. They used to beat her with different objects even while she was pregnant. Whenever her boyfriend brought food to her, they would not allow her to have access to it.
Adebola further explained that after she was released from the hospital, her Amaka’s parents tried to keep the child from her boyfriend’s family.
Ibrahim’s mother, Mrs. Ebunola Lawal, revealed that she reported the repeated beatings of Amaka by her parents to the police severally but nothing was done.
She also claimed whenever her son went to visit his girlfriend, Amaka, her parents would beat her continuously.
According to Mrs. Ebunola Lawal, the major issue that led to Amaka’s death was on January 1, 2020 when they gave Amaka and her son clothes for the festive season.
A few minutes after she left our house, she called Ibrahim on the phone that her mother had started beating her for collecting the clothes and money from us. I was informed that her parents collected the baby from her and locked her in their apartment and beat her for two days.
Ibrahim’s mother stated that it was in the process of beating her that she became unconscious and was rushed to Gbagada General Hospital, where she was confirmed dead on Sunday.
Amaka’s father, Mike, however maintained his innocence and that of his wife.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Bala Elkana, said the state command is waiting for the medical report to ascertain the cause of Amaka’s death.
