Court Sentence Unilag Former Lecturer To 21 Years For Raping Admission Seeker
A High Court in Ikeja, Lagos State has on February 20 sentenced a former part-time lecturer in the University of Lagos, Baruwa Afeez Akin, to 21 years imprisonment for raping an 18-year-old admission-seeker.
The trial judge, Justice Josephine Oyefeso found Baruwa guilty of a one-count charge of rape contrary to Section 258(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2011.
During the sentence, the trial judge described Baruwa’s action as heinous, adding that his sentence should serve as a deterrent to other perpetrators.
She expressed that;
The offence committed against this young lady was a violation of her chastity which would have left huge emotional scars from which I pray and hope she will recover. I cannot begin to imagine the physical and mental trauma she has had to endure from the man who she considered her father’s friend, a community leader who should have known better. This is a shame.
According to Justice Oyefeso, his crime not only offends the rape survivor, but also offends her family, the society at large and God.
