Nigerian Freed After Three Years On Death Row In Saudi Arabia Over Drug Trafficking
A criminal Court in Makka, Saudi Arabia has discharged and acquitted a Nigerian man identified as Sheikh Ibrahim Ibrahim who was on death roll for 3 years after being accused of drug trafficking.
Ibrahim, a renowned Islamic cleric from Zamfara State, was allegedly accused of drug trafficking and was sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia.
According to a series of tweet by Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) @nidcom_gov, a delegation from NIDCOM and Zamfara State Government went to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia with documentary evidence for Ibrahim’s trial which took place on Tuesday, February 18.
A documentary evidence which included a written statement by Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) stating that they have arrested and charged three persons who planted he drugs on the defendant was provided to the Saudi Court which ruled in favor of Ibrahim.
Governor Bello Mohammed had earlier met with President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene in the matter who in turn, instructed the Minister of Justice to proceed.
The commissioner explained that;
It is evident that Ibrahim required the services of advocates which Governor Bello Mohammed swiftly handled by employing a team of Lawyers for Ibrahim and constituted a delegation, including a lawyer representing the National Commission on Diaspora from the Federal Ministry of Justice, to Saudi Arabia to monitor the proceeding.
The commissioner said Malam Ibrahim will be flown back to Nigeria to be reunited with his family soon.
The Chairman, NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri- Erewa in her comment about the release on Twitter, said;
