Coronavirus: Dutch Football Association Denies Ajax Of Eredivisie Title, Could Be Bad News For Liverpool
Dutch giants Ajax have been denied the Eredivisie title after it was confirmed there would be no 2019/20 league champions in the Netherlands due to Coronavirus pandemic.
This comes days after the Dutch government extended a ban on major public events by three months on Tuesday.
Ajax lead the table on goal difference over AZ Alkmaar but Ajax have been told they will not be crowned champions for Dutch league.
Unfortunately, with the cabinet’s most recent coronavirus measures, it has become impossible to play out the 2019-2020 season of professional football leagues in time.
Part of a Dutch Football Association statement read;
It will be crystal clear to everyone involved, from supporters and players to directors and referees, that public health always comes first; the decisions made today about the settlement of the running competitions are only a football problem in the perspective of what the coronavirus causes in society.
This sets a bad precedent for English clubs such as Liverpool, who lead the Premier League by 25 points, and Leeds United, who are top of the Championship table and hopeful of a return to the Premier League.
Equally, ADO Den Haag and RKC Waalwijk, who currently reside in the Eredivisie relegation zone, will not be relegated from the top-tier of Dutch football, which could come as welcome news to Bournemouth, Aston Villa and Norwich City.
This is the first example in European football of these decisions being taken, with Belgian football opting to end their season but award runaway league-leaders Club Brugge the title.
The Premier League and EFL remain committed to completing the 2019/20 season.
UEFA have this week reiterated their intention to finish the Champions League and Europa League.
