Coronavirus: US Evacuates 997 Americans From Nigeria
US Mission in Nigeria has said 997 Americans have been evacuated from Nigeria amid spreading Coronavirus in the country.
In a statement on Thursday, the mission said this is to help the Americans reunite with their families and loved ones in the United States.
According to the mission, three chartered flights repatriated 850 American citizens from Lagos, while 147 were evacuated from Abuja.
Claire Pierangelo, US consul general, said in times of emergency, the United States Department of State has no greater priority than the safety and security of its citizens overseas.
Pierangelo said;
This has been three weeks in the making. We had more than 50 people working on this on a daily basis to make sure that we can find the Americans, get the planes, secure flight clearances for the planes to land here and also ensure safe passage of the Americans traveling to the airport since the city is on lockdown.
She stated that;
It was an enormous effort and I am incredibly proud of my team. We appreciate all the help from our Nigerian partners. We couldn’t have done this without them.
The US consul general expressed that the mission remains committed to working closely with Nigeria and the various health authorities to keep everyone healthy and safe amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Meanwhile, some Nigerians in China, in a video that has since gone viral, were chased onto the streets by Chinese security agents amid coronavirus lockdown.
A commentator who happens to be a Nigerian while recording the video said the Chinese government is treating them like second class citizens despite the fact that their citizens are in Africa with full freedom.
The Nigerian man said that the police officials chased them out of their hotel rooms into the rain.
In another shot in the same video file, some Nigerians were seen roaming in a pack as they complained of the inhumane way they were sent away to seek shelter even after they have observed a 15-day quarantine.

Currently our people have no place to stay in China, they can’t lodge in any hotel and the Chinese landlords won’t give them accommodation.
Buhari and his team are quiet.@UN isn’t saying anything.
