Lockdown: Lagos Withdraws Charges Against Naira Marley, Gbadamosi
Lagos State Government has withdrawn charges against singer, Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, and former Lagos governorship candidate, Babatunde Gbadamosi.
Naira Marley, Gbadamosi and his wife were charged before the Lagos State Magistrates’ Court in Ogba for attending a birthday party that had several people in attendance, which was in violation of the state’s social distancing directive to check the spread of coronavirus.
The birthday party was organized by popular Nollywood actress, Funke Akindele to celebrate her husband’s 43rd birthday, JJC Skillz.
The couple were on April 4 arraigned and sentenced to 14 days of community service, 14 days of isolation in a location to be determined by Lagos State Ministry of Health and to pay a fine of N100,000 each.
MDB reported that Naira Marley and Gbadamosi were scheduled for arraignment on Wednesday, but according to one of the defence counsel, Mr Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN), the government withdrew the four counts filed against the three defendants.
The PUNCH reported that policemen barred journalists from the court premises and at the end of the proceedings, Adegboruwa briefed journalists on what transpired in the courtroom.
He said the state withdrew the charges on the condition that the defendants would tender an apology to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The defendants must also sign an undertaking to continue to comply with the directives of the President of Nigeria and Governor Sanwo-Olu and must go on 14days isolation.
