Former NNPC GMD, Maikanti Baru Dies
Former group managing director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Maikanti Baru, has dead.
Baru died late Friday of an undisclosed ailment at age 60.
His death was announced on Saturday morning by the current General Manger of NNPC, Mele Kyari.
Kyari wrote on Twitter;
My brother, my friend and my mentor, Dr Maikanti Kachalla Baru, immediate past GMD of NNPC died late last night. He was of exemplary character and disposition. May Allah forgive him and have mercy upon him.

While confirming Baru’s death, the NNPC in a official statement by its spokesperson, Kennie Obateru, described him as ‘a consummate Mechanical Engineer, who died after a brief illness.’
Baru was born in July 1959 in Misau, Bauchi State and attended Federal Government College, Jos, for his secondary education where he graduated in 1978.
In 1982, he obtained his bachelor of engineering degree from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
Baru got a doctorate degree in Computer Aided Engineering from the University of Sussex in the UK.
Baru led a career in engineering, rising through the ranks at the NNPC before he was eventually appointed to lead the organisation by President Buhari in 2016.
He was replaced with Mele Kyari in 2019.
It is however unclear, as at press time, whether he passed on in Nigeria or abroad.
