Just In: Dubai Returnee Who Died In Lagos Did Not Have COVID-19 – Prof Abayomi
Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, has revealed that a Nigerian returnee who recently died in an isolation facility in the state, was not coronavirus positive.
This update comes two days after the Commissioner apologised for making an error about the cause of the death of the Dubai returnee.
Prof. Abayomi had on Tuesday stated that the man died from coronavirus, but clarified that the announcement was a presumed coronavirus related death and his test result was being awaited.
The commissioner however revealed the test result on Thursday via a series of tweets on social media.
He said;
I hereby inform the general public that the Nigerian who recently returned from Dubai as part of a group of returnees who were placed in a COVID-19 isolation program in Lekki.

Professor Abayomi stated that;
He developed complications and was transferred to one of our facilities where he died. Because of the sudden nature of his demise and without any prior knowledge of his multiple preexisting conditions it was presumed to be a #COVID19 related death.

The commissioner said the presumptive attribution is a precaution to ensure the safe clinical management of the patient and subsequent handling of the corpse.

He revealed that the definitive coronavirus gold standard test has turned out to be negative for the infection.

Meanwhile, total coronavirus infection toll in Nigeria exceeded the 5,000 cases mark after Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced 193 new cases on Thursday.
There are now 5162 total cases, 1180 discharged and 167 deaths across the country.
