Breaking: Nigeria’s COVID-19 Toll Hits Over 23,000 As NCDC Announces 684 New Cases

Nigeria’s coronavirus infection toll has surpassed the 23,000 mark after recording 684 new COVID-19 cases in 18 states and Federal Capital Territory.

It would be recalled that over 22,000 cases, were recorded two days ago, indicating an increase of 1278 additional cases between June 24th and June 26th.

This increased rate in cases is as a result of high community transmission rate, as many continue to safety guidelines.

The agency made the announcement on Friday night via its Twitter handle, saying;

Total coronavirus cases in Nigeria have now jumped from 22,614 confirmed on Thursday to 23,298 infections.

Number of fatalities have increased from 549 to 554, while the number of discharged patients increased from 7822 recorded yesterday to 8253 successfully managed cases.

Also, NCDC announced in its COVID-19 situation report that total samples tested have also grown from 122,155 to 125,090 as at June 25th.

Meanwhile, eight health workers at the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta have tested positive for coronavirus.

The health workers who consisted of medical doctors, nurses, and administrative staff were said to have attended to a two-and-half-year-old COVID-19 patient receiving treatment at the centre’s isolation ward.

Head, Public Relations, and Information, Segun Orisajo, confirmed this on Friday in a statement.

Orisajo said the status of the affected health workers was detected due to the contact tracing carried out by the hospital Infection Control Team.

He added that none of the affected staff had so far shown the symptoms of the virus.
