Irish mixed martial arts fighter and boxer, Conor McGregor has announced his retirement from fighting – for the third time in four years.

The former two-division Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) World Champion made this known via his Twitter account on Sunday morning.

He wrote;

Hey guys I have decided to retire from fighting. Thank you all for the amazing memories! What a ride it’s been! Here is a picture of myself and my mother in Las Vegas post one of my World title wins! Pick the home of your dreams Mags I love you! Whatever you desire it’s yours.

This is not the first time the controversial Irish fighter is announcing his retirement from the sport.

In March 2019, he declared his retirement only to return to the UFC Octagon less than 12 months later, to defeat American fighter Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone in just 40 seconds in Las Vegas, Nevada.

McGregor, who is better known as ‘The Notorious,’ had in 2016 also announced his retirement.

McGregor leaves the sport ranked 8th on the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) pound-for-pound list with a record of 22 wins and four losses.

He is the first UFC fighter to hold two championship belts at the same time.

McGregor is estimated to have earned in the region of $100m (£80m) alone from his UFC fights and has a net worth of $110m (£86m).
