Mosques, Churches To Reopen From June 19 – Lagos Govt.

Lagos state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced that mosques and churches will be permitted to reopen from June 19th.

The new development comes a day after Lagos state Government said the possibility of reopening churches and mosques in the state had been ruled out, notwithstanding the nationwide lift of the ban imposed on every religious gatherings.

The governor has now stated otherwise during a briefing at the Government House, Marina on Thursday. 

He said mosques are to reopen from June 19 while churches are to begin services from June 21, with crowd not more 40% of their original capacity.

The Governor added that;

Even if your 40% capacity is really so large, you cannot have beyond 500 people, and keeping the maximum capacity is really important.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said children below age of 15 not should not be allowed at religious gatherings restricted to only Fridays for Muslims and Sundays for Christians.

He also stated that people above the age of 65 should not be allowed into the premises because they are more vulnerable to the novel disease.

Governor Sanwo-Olu warned that other regular services must be put on hold until another review of the current situation.

All religious gatherings have been banned in the country since March after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in February.

The ban was necessitated to curb the spread of the virus during such gatherings and prevent community transmission.
