An offshore earthquake with a preliminary 5.5 magnitude has struck Davao Oriental province in the southern Philippines on Sunday.
The Philippine Institute of Seismology and Volcanology (Phivolcs) announced this saying the quake, which struck at 11:12am, hit at a depth of 101 km, about 96 km southeast of Manay town, Xinhua reports.
The institute added that the quake, which was tectonic in origin – relating to the structure of the earth’s crust – will trigger aftershocks but will not cause damage.
The Philippines has frequent seismic activity due to its location along the Pacific “Ring of Fire”.
On December 2019, a powerful earthquake measuring 6.8-magnitude struck the Philippines near the city of Davao, which killed over 4 people and injured several others.
The quake was centred 38 miles southwest of Davao on the island of Mindanao, at a depth of 28.2km, the US Geological Survey said, revising down the magnitude from an earlier reported 6.9.
