Inspector-General of Police, Adamu Mohammed, has ordered an investigation into a viral video showing some police officers in Ibadan, Oyo state sexually harassing a 25-year-old female suspect by asking her unwarranted questions about her sex life.
The officers had met the lady, who gave her name as Towobola, at the home of a suspected kidnapper and armed robber who they were on operation to arrest.
The policemen, after taking the kidnap suspect away, began to interrogate the handcuffed lady, accusing her of sleeping with the alleged kidnapper.
One of the police officers who identified himself as ‘Wyclef’, brought out his phone and started to film Tobowola as he asked her questions about her sex life.
In the video, which is about six minutes long, Wyclef could be heard mocking the lady, telling her that young ladies are fond of dating men with questionable wealth which often lands them in trouble.
He mockingly stated that if he were to woo Towobola, she would not give in to his advances but would prefer to sexually intimate with criminals.
The policeman subsequently asked her if she was a virgin and how many men she had slept with.
He repeatedly threatened to beat up the visibly scared lady if she failed to respond to his questions.
Towobola beggedthe policeman intermittently, insisting that she never knew the suspect was a criminal. She claims to have just recently completed her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.
In the concluding part of the video, Wyclef faces the camera and boasts that he “catches suspects like fowls”.
NPF has now reacted to the viral video through its official Twitter page on Wednesday.
The tweets read in part;
The Inspector General of Police has ordered discreet investigations into the circumstances surrounding the dehumanising treatment meted out to a female citizen in the above viral video.
