Beyonce has released a new video for her 2019 song ‘Brown Skin Girl’, coming on the heels of her recently dropped visual album, ‘Black is King’.
The superstar released the video as a stand-alone visual on YouTube today as it was previously only available to Disney+ subscribers, which has exclusive rights to the ‘Black Is King’ album.
The track features her daughter Blue Ivy Carter, Nigerian superstar WizKid and Saint Jhn. For the video, which was directed by British-Nigerian director Jenn Nkiru, they are joined by supermodel Naomi Campbell, actress Lupita Nyong’o and singer and Beyoncé’s fellow Destiny’s Child, Kelly Rowland.
Beyoncé dropped the video on Good Morning America (GMA) on Monday, accompanied by a statement, which reads;
It was so important to me in ‘Brown Skin Girl’ that we represented all different shades of brown. We wanted every character to be shot in a regal light — Jenn Nkiru came up with the black debutantes. It was important that we are all in this together and we’re all celebrating each other.
Nkiru on her part said; “My greatest inspiration comes from black people, specifically black women.”
Like many of Beyonce’s recent videos, the Jenn Nkiru-directed clip is almost more like a series of paintings than a conventional video, with Beyonce and many others appearing in a series of beautiful settings and outfits.
The 85-minute ‘Black Is King’ arrived on Disney + last month. This marks Beyoncé’s 3rd visual album, following 2013’s Beyoncé and 2016’s Lemonade.
Ahead of the release of the 3rd visual album, she dropped the video for “Already,” which features Major Lazer and Shatta Wale.
