Jacob Blake: Black Man Who Was Shot By Police Multiple Times In Wisconsin Paralysed – His Father Reveals
A black man, Jacob Blake, who was shot multiple times in the back by Wisconsin police officers on Sunday, August 23 has become paralysed from the waist down.
Blake, 29, was shot several times as he went to a car and opened its door in the city of Kenosha on Sunday.
Following the shooting, the injured man was taken to a hospital in Milwaukee where he underwent surgery late Monday, his lawyer said.
His father, Jacob Blake Snr, has now said that his son is paralysed, although doctors do not know if it is permanent, CNN reports.
Jacob Blake Snr added that his son had “eight holes” in his body after he was shot while his three young sons were in the car watching.
Two Kenosha officers are on administrative leave. The local police union has urged the public to withhold judgment until a state investigation is complete.
Enraged protesters since Sunday have poured into the streets of the city, demanding justice for the unlawful attack on the man.
In the city, the protesters have set ablaze vehicles, vandalised building and whole rows of streetlights were pulled down.
Some had tried to force their way into Kenosha’s public safety building, demanding that the officers involved in the shooting be arrested. A door was broken off its hinges before officers in riot gear used pepper spray to disperse the crowd.
At least one officer was injured in the neck by a firework, the New York Times reports.
The shooting comes in the wake of the killing of another black man, George Floyd, in Minnesota in May.
Floyd’s death led to demonstrations across the US and in many cities internationally.
It puts a spotlight on the treatment of African-Americans by US law enforcement and prompted a wider reflection on racism in society.
