Police have taken over the Edo State House of Assembly complex in Benin City, the state capital on Thursday morning with patrol vehicles were stationed around the building.

According to Channels Television, the police took the action following a reported threat of an attack on the facility.

The police officers were led to the Assembly by a Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Ayoola Ajala.

Security operatives at the Assembly include operatives attached to the Police Mobile Force and Operation Thunderstorm.

Shortly after the police were deployed at the facility, personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) also arrived at the complex.

This comes barely 24 hours after the Deputy Speaker, Yekini Idiaye, was impeached by the state lawmakers.

According to the House, Idiaye was impeached on grounds of alleged gross misconduct during plenary on Wednesday and replaced with Roland Asoro, the lawmaker representing Orhionmwon II Constituency.

Asoro was immediately administered the oath of office and oath of allegiance by the Speaker.

However, reports say Idaiye was removed by seven pro-Governor Godwin Obaseki lawmakers in Government House, Benin City, for allegedly endorsing All Progressives Congress (APC), Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

Idiaye and four other lawmakers had declared their support for Osagie Ize-Iyamu as against the incumbent governor, Obaseki.

The five lawmakers were among the 10 members of the House inaugurated in July 2019 while 14 others have yet to be inaugurated.

More details to come.
