A 22-year-old lady, Kaylee Muthart who ripped out her own eyes while high on drugs has received a pair of prosthetic eyeballs.

Two years ago, Muthart gouged out her eyes as a horrified bystander struggled to stop her. Before pulling out her eyes, Muthart, who was high on methamphetamine, began hallucinating.

The last thing she saw was a light pole morphing into a white dove. The trees appeared to curl downward and the skies darkened as if a storm were gathering.

Muthart said she sensed the world was ending, so she began to dig into the sockets of her green eyes, believing that somehow by plucking them out she might save the world.

After being rushed to hospital, doctors told Muthart that she would never see again. The injury became her motivation to quit drugs for good.

Now, Muthart has received new prosthetic eyeballs so that she can appear “more normal.”

She said; “I was so excited to get them. I just wanted to appear more normal to the outside world.”

Muthart, who is enrolled in a blind school in her home state of South Carolina, was accompanied to the life-changing appointment by her boyfriend, Alex George, 42.

He said;

It melted my heart. She was never any different to me, but I know she’s wanted this for a very long time and I’m so happy she has this now. I felt so much joy, love, appreciation and thanks to God. Seeing Kaylee happy makes me happy. She is always an upbeat and positive person, but this made her extra happy. It was incredible to be able to look in her eyes.

Muthart added that she will never forget the moment doctors gave her her eyes back. She said she felt like herself again.

She has given up drugs, learnt how to use brail and has plans to go back to school to get her degree.

Muthart expressed;

Coming off meth was awful, physically and mentally, there were hallucinations and psychosis, but I overcame it, thanks to God.

She added that she has started writing a book about her experience, and will soon have a guide dog to help her navigate the world.
