Nigerians Condemn ASUU’s Decision To Continue Strike Until Demands Are Met
Nigerians have condemned Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)’s decision to continue strike until the Federal Government addresses all its demands.
On March 23, ASUU declared a total and indefinite strike over the non-payment of salaries of their members who refused to enroll in the federal government’s IPPIS, payroll software mandated for all public officials and other demands.
ASUU through its President, Biodun Ogunyemi, has now vowed to continue the strike during an interactive session with critical stakeholders at the University of Port Harcourt on Saturday, August 22.
The interactive session was meant to provide public enlightenment on the struggles of the union.
Ogunyemi said ASUU is demanding that the Federal Government implement its 2012 universities needs assessment, adding that the union’s demands are genuine and in the interest of the nation.

However, many Nigerians feel differently about the continued strike action as they call for the end of the strike.
See some reactions below;
While the rest of the world are rallying behind their students, making sure they don’t miss out on education as a result of the global pandemic, ASUU is here holding strike. Nigeria na bounced check oloun.

It is shocking that the ASUU strike will still linger on, no common ground has been reached! What becomes the fate of the Nigerian youth determined to go back to school but frustrated by the back and forth educational system? #Wemustfixthis

This further shows the negligence towards the education sector and the reason while the youths shows lackadaisical attitudes towards education.
Over the years, the Govt has consistently & repeatedly tells the youths to go after 💰 thus, leaving the education sys. in comatose 💔

An African proverb says, “when two elephants fight, it’s the grass that gets trampled.” The two elephants – ASUU and the FG. Students would be at the receiving end. A very sad situation. Stakeholders should pls try as much as possible not to let this strike action linger. https://t.co/hU9qfibMEz

Just feel sorry for Nigeria students tbh, imagine a country where it’s ministers spend billions of naira on plastic chairs, told lies that they feed it’s citizens during this pandemic with billions of naira….
I just wish God can format this country as it carries virus 😩

I think we play too much with FG and ASUU.
Nigerian students we need to roll our sleeves and shock them with a powerful step.
The painful thing is ASUU are fighting for their pockets while FG careless about us cos their children are studying abroad.— Ibrahim Iliya Avan (@Avankingavan) August 24, 2020
When private schools are graduating their students already FG and ASSU are still dragging matter, they have no plans for education sector and healthcare at all

It is so sad the two elephant care less about the grass (Students) since they know, their words are mostly in the private University.. I just wonder what kind of govt we have. Spending less on EDUCATION, HEALTH CARE but are so ready to disburse fund 4 renovation of NASS. OH🇳🇬 😭

It would have been better if they had included reduction of school fees in all of their demands. A lot of parents have lost their jobs. Some have had their salaries reduced by 50% and even more or less as a result of the impact of covid 19 on our economy.

ASUU is selfish, with this Long strike everyone will think they’re fighting for students welfare, but the truth is they’re fighting for their pockets

That’s when the senior lecturers will be buying new cars , asuu ain’t fighting for the student , they’re focused on their selfish interest. We just want to resume and graduate…age isn’t at our side
— kuttyjay (@kuttyjay4) August 24, 2020
Look at schools that aren’t under ASUU, they are doing relatively better than schools under ASUU. And the strike isn’t even helping the lecturers. Because some lecturers are actually allowed to sell textbooks that they write, and that helps them too.
— Diva (@_divaoloto) August 24, 2020
Pls, ASUU we wouldn’t corporate, just let us resume. Just be patience like us

The more the students stay at home, the more criminals we are nurturing for the future.
There is no excuse for not meeting the demands of ASUU since 2012.— NOBLEMAN (@NOBLEMANESQ) August 24, 2020
