UNILAG Governing Council Confirms Prof. Folasade Ogunsola As Acting VC, Breaks 58-Year Record Of Institution

University of Lagos (UNILAG) Governing Council has confirmed Prof. Folasade Ogunsola as the acting Vice-Chancellor of the institution.

The confirmation was done at a virtual meeting of members of the Council presided over by Dr John Momoh, newly appointed Interim Chairman of the Council.

With her emergence, Ogunsola broke UNILAG’s 58-year record by becoming the first female to be appointed as an acting VC of the institution since it was founded in 1962.

Ogunsola was nominated as the acting VC on Monday by the Senate of the institution. She polled 135 votes to Prof. Ben Oghojafor, who polled 31 votes at an emergency meeting of the body.

Ogunsola is a professor of Medical Microbiology and is the first child of a renowned academician, Prof. Akin Mabogunje.

Federal Government had, last week, asked UNILAG Senate to reconvene and nominate an acting VC following the management crisis between the varsity’s Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Wale Babalakin, and Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe.

FG also asked Babalakin and Ogundipe to recuse themselves from official duties, pending the outcome of the Special Visitation Panel set up by the President Muhammadu Buhari.

The inauguration of the visitor’s panel will hold in Abuja on Wednesday, August 25.
