CAN Lagos Chapter Directs Churches To End Crossover Services At 11pmLagos State Chapter of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has directed all churches in the state to close crossover services by 11pm on December 31.

The new directive nullifies a previous instruction by Lagos CAN which directed churches to hold crossover services from 10pm to 12am.

This contravened Lagos State Government’s decision to cancel the annual crossover services across the state, citing the 12pm to 4:00 a.m. national curfew that is in place, as well as the second wave of coronavirus pandemic in the country.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who addressed reporters at the State House in Marina, implored religious leaders to ensure that their followers observe the protocols put in place by the government to curb the spread of the disease.

The Governor added;

There are not meant to be any gathering. The curfew set by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 is still active. There is a national curfew from 12 midnight to 4:00 a.m. and that has to be respected. No night vigils in any form.

However, in latest development, Lagos CAN, following a meeting with Lagos State Government, has now instructed churches to end their services at 11pm, in order to allow members return to their respective homes by 12am curfew begins.

In a statement signed by Bishop Stephen Adegbite, chairman of Lagos Chapter of CAN expressed;

The Government has explained to us why it is imperative to uphold the directives on the curfew based on the fact that it would be difficult to guarantee compliance to the time schedule proposed by CAN which may lead to breakdown of law and order and an increase in the spread of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic which has become more aggressive through its second wave.

As part of our responsibility as a law abiding organisation and in response to the appeal made to us by the State Government, we hereby direct, that all Churches should ensure their services on the 31 of December, 2020 ends at 11:00pm so as to allow attendees get to their respective homes and places of rest on or before 12:00 midnight.
