Nigeria Customs Service has on Sunday announced that its Kebbi State Command has intercepted a truck along Yauri, Zamare waterside in the state carrying guns and cartridges concealed in bags of locally-produced rice.
A statement by the NCS Public Relations Officer, DC Joseph Attah, which confirmed the discovery, said the bags upon close scrutiny contained 73 locally-manufactured guns and 891 cartridges.
Three suspects were immediately arrested and are being detained while preliminary investigation is ongoing.
He said;
Officers of the Nigeria Customs Service Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone B, on information patrol along Yauri, Zamare waterside in Kebbi State, intercepted a truck loaded with locally-produced rice with some sacks concealed under the rice.
Attah stated;
Upon careful examination the bags were found to contain 73 locally-manufactured guns and 891 cartridges.
Three suspects were immediately arrested and are being detained while preliminary investigation is ongoing.
The PRO added that the Controller of FOU, Zome B, Hamisu Albashir, who described the feat as a warning to those planning similar venture, quoted the Customs chief as urging border communities dwellers to cooperate with his agency by providing credible information to aid the operations of NCS.
Attah stated;
Controller of FOU, Zone B, Hamisu Albashir describes the feat as a signal to all those who may be planning to bring any harmful items (s) in to the country through Zone B.
He calls on members of the public, especially border community dwellers to provide credible information for effective border security.
